One of the best experiences in Flåm is, in our opinion, to rent a
bike in Flåm and bring it with you up to Myrdal Station (the end
station) on the Flåm Railway and then ride back to Flåm on the
last part of the famous scenic route Rallarvegen.
You can rent decent quality mountainbikes and helmets at the
renting place next to the Railway Museum and buy a one way
ticket for “one person + bike” from Flåm to Myrdal at the Visitors
center. You then deliver the bike to the railway crew in front of
the last carriage and collect it again at Myrdal.
From Myrdal, you follow the gravel road below the station down
towards Flåm Valley.
Keep in mind that the first part of the decent is steep with a lot
of serpentine turns, but it is possible to walk beside the bike the
steepest parts. The rest of the trip is through beautiful scenery,
with waterfalls, bridges, tunnels and only two small hills to
climb. The whole trip takes about half a day, depending of how
often you stop to enjoy the amazing views.
You may have to reserve a bike ticket on the Flåm Railway on the
internet before the ship´s arrival in Flåm (on crowded days). Use
Norway’s Best webpage to book.
It is also possible to combine the trip with Flåm Zipline. You then
go by the railway to Vatnahalsen, the second last station before
the end station at Myrdal and walk over to the zipline. You then
“fly” down to Rallarrosa Mountain Farm where your bike is
ready. Remember to book everything in advance (train + zipline
+ bike). In this case you don’t have to rent your bike in Flåm and
bring it on the train.
